6. The Attractive Floating Shop

Hundreds of vendor boats ply their way along the klong every day, like floating shops. I have seen boats filled with fresh vegetables, fruit, flowers, noodles, and even furniture, but none of them matched the one I have painted here.

This particular boat seemed to me to be more attractive than all the other boats. It was loaded full of all kinds of goods, so full that even the seller was hidden somewhere on the boat behind all the products.

I saw many interesting products on this particular boat - toothbrushes, toothpicks, picture frames, bugles, vases, hats, belts, umbrellas, stationeries, T-shirts, coins, even sanitary towels, just to name a few. This boat not only appealed to me but to the other visitors along the canal as well.

In the painting I capture a sales transaction moment. A boat filled with tourists had slowed down and were stopped alongside the shop boat in order to purchase what they wanted.

I painted a little more detail on the hat and bags in the foreground of the vendor boat to lead the eyes to the center of interest that surely must be the standing girl who was purchasing something.

Many colors were used in this painting but all of them were tinted before being applied. I used yellow ochre for most of the hats and bags in the foreground. All the products on the laden boat were painted using a little scarlet lake, viridian green, ruby red and a mixture of cobalt blue with bits of new gamboge and scarlet red to make a grayed, middle-blue for some parts of the shadows on the water.
