I call this painting, “A Last Group of Tourists”. It was late in the afternoon and the busy morning hours were gone. At this moment the atmosphere of the market seemed very quiet, except for the one boatload of tourists heading back to wherever they had come from. On the right side, the empty boat lying motionless behind the bushes, seemed to reflect the stillness of this time.
The composition of this painting is particularly interesting with the tourist boat pointing to an old wooden house set further back. The afternoon sunlight shining through the old canvas sunblind in front of the wooden house adds to the painting’s appeal. So the whole composition looks balanced as the eye moves from the tourist boat back to the house.
The sky is painted in cerulean blue on a dampened area. I then added a little cadmium yellow with a touch of ruby red. For the water I again used cerulean blue mixed with a tinted scarlet lake for the grayed middle-blue of the shadow. The boat was painted using burnt sienna mixed with slightly less ultramarine blue to make a warm dark gray-brown. I used this same mix for the roof of the house. The shadow of the hanging canvas sunblind and the wooden house is the most interesting point of all. For this particular shadow I used Payne’s gray. The shadow must be painted with confidence to make every stroke count in this particular area. Later I touched up around the canvas sunblind with a darker Payne’s gray mixed with a little burnt sienna in order to emphasize the depth inside the old wooden house
