One of the highlights for visitors to Damnern Saduak Floating Market is a tour along the canal in a sampan boat.
There are many boat-service stations around the market and it's not hard to find one. Usually they all have a little information in English for visitors. A boat-service station is always crowded and interesting to observe. There are all kinds of people from different places around the world who have come to enjoy the delights of the market.
I found one boat-service station that seemed suitable for my idea of a painting. This particular station was not as crowded as I knew it could be, but still there were a few people queued up and ready to depart. I captured that moment in my painting.
The center of interest in this painting is the sign and the group of tourists in the process of climbing into the boat. The diagonal shape of the painting adds an interesting touch to the composition.
I used a little cerulean blue and a bit of ultramarine blue for the vendor's shirt in the middle of the painting. In the background I used a mixture of yellow ochre and ultramarine blue to paint the bushes behind the sign. A little tinted Payne's gray mixed with a bit of viridian green touched here and there around the sign with a little darker shade below the sign pushes back the unseen elements of the market.
The rest of the background is painted with a mixture of Payne's gray and a little ultramarine blue to indicate the depth of the windows. For the water in the canal I used a mixture of yellow ochre, cerulean blue with a bit of Payne's gray.
The loose-edge brushstroke I used on both sides of the painting is another interesting method to indicate the boundary of the diagonal. This painting style, along with the contrast of one figure to the other, all work to shape the perfect composition.
